Serenity Horse Haven works with Texas Sheriff's Departments; the Texas Department of Public Safety; the SPCA of East Texas, and the Canton Veterinary Clinic to rescue and care for critically neglected and abused horses.

Intake Criteria (based on available space):

• Serenity Horse Haven is available to law enforcement agencies to take in horses (no mules or donkeys) that have been picked-up or seized due to neglect or abuse. Most of the horses we receive are either very emaciated or near death when arriving at Serenity Horse Haven.

• Serenity Horse Haven is available to law enforcement agencies to take in horses (no mules or donkeys) that have been hit by cars or trucks where the officer is unable to locate the owner of the horse. Serenity Horse Haven will care for the injured horse for 18 days, if no owner comes forward to claim the horse, the horse will be awarded to Serenity Horse Haven to be cared for and placed for adoption. If the owner is located or comes forward to claim the horse, Serenity Horse Haven will ask the owner to reimburse Serenity Horse Haven for the cost of caring for the horse while in the care of Serenity Horse Haven.

• Serenity Horse Haven also is available to law enforcement agencies to take in horses (no mules or donkeys) that are estray. Serenity Horse Haven will care for the estray for the 18 day estray period and if no owner comes forward to claim the estray, the estray will be awarded to Serenity Horse Haven to be placed for adoption. If the owner is located or comes forward to claim the horse, Serenity Horse Haven will ask the owner to reimburse Serenity Horse Haven for the cost of caring for the horse while in the care of Serenity Horse Haven.

In all three scenarios, if the horse is awarded to Serenity Horse Haven, Serenity Horse Haven needs a court order (or formal letter from the law enforcement agency in the case of an estray) awarding the horse to Serenity Horse Haven and authorizing Serenity Horse Haven the authority to care for, adopt out, and euthanize the horse (if required) based on our veterinarian's recommendations.
